Guinea pigs are very popular pets, with around 700,000 in the UK, but very little research has been carried out into how best to meet their needs.
The study conducted by a final year vet nurse student Amber Harrup, and researchers at Bristol’s Vet School, aims to find out about the different ways guinea pigs are cared for in the UK, and discover what is most important to them in order for them to lead healthy and happy lives.
Dr Nicola Rooney Research Fellow in Animal Welfare and Behaviour at the University of Bristol’s School of Veterinary Sciences, and one of the researchers on the project, said: “Very little is currently known about how guinea pigs are kept in the UK, so we are keen to hear from guinea pig owners about all aspects of their pet’s life. We did a similar survey regarding rabbits several years back which produced some really important findings. Now it’s time to turn our attention to guinea pigs.
“We want to know where guinea pigs live, how they behave, what they eat and how healthy they are, as well as how they interact with their companions and owners.”
By completing the survey, participants will also be given the opportunity to win £40 worth of prizes for their guinea pig.
