The award recognises ophthalmologists’ outstanding commitment and ambition to develop their skills and improve the lives of patients living with ophthalmic diseases.
The award provides research funding of US$50,000 to support the research programme on novel immunotherapies for age-related macular degeneration, on which Dr Theodoropoulou is collaborating with Professor Andrew Dick in the Academic Unit of Ophthalmology.
Dr Theodoropoulou won the award for her project entitled: ‘The role of an immunomodulatory cytokine and its associated pathways in the pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration’.
The Bayer Global Ophthalmology Research Award is aimed at supporting a diverse range of research projects in the field of retinal ophthalmology, including diagnosis and assessment, treatment, surgery, quality of life, and mechanisms of action.
