The Award recognises the work of a psychologist who, either directly or through broadcast and print media, has made an outstanding contribution to raising the profile of psychology with the general public.

Professor Hood’s extensive research on the mind and brain forms the basis of numerous public lectures, appearances in the media and three popular science books. In 2011 he delivered the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures, ‘Meet your brain’. In 2012 he devised the world’s largest simultaneous memory experiment for the Society of Biology, involving 2,000 participants.

Upon hearing the news of his award Professor Hood, a Chartered Psychologist and Fellow of the Society, said:

‘For me, communicating the passion and wonder of the science of the mind is both a worthy and enjoyable pursuit. But to receive this award from the British Psychological Society for doing so, makes me all the more satisfied and happy that I am doing the right thing.’
