She studied Philosophy and Politics at Bristol and graduated in 1971 before writing a number of highly-regarded books which have cemented her place as one of the most influential political theorists of our time.

Professor Phillips is currently the first female occupant of the Graham Wallas Professorship of Political Science at the London School of Economics, having previously directed the Gender Institute there. 

She has been elected Fellow of the British Academy, has occupied distinguished appointments overseas and delivered prestigious lectures at home.

The Chief Executive of Sightsavers International Dr Caroline Harper OBE will receive a Doctor of Science degree for her work as a charity leader and also for her highly-successful career in the energy sector.

Dr Harper grew up in Bristol and studied Physics at the University of Bristol before graduating in 1981. She then moved to Cambridge to complete a PhD in Energy Studies and went on to work for British Gas and Transco before becoming the Managing Director of Amerada Hess Gas Ltd.

Her career in the energy sector culminated in the award of an OBE in 2000 for services to the gas industry.

In 2005, Dr Harper was appointed as Chief Executive of Sightsavers International which works to prevent blindness, restore sights and promote equality for those who are blind.

An honorary degree is a major accolade, awarded in recognition of outstanding achievement and distinction in a field or activity consonant with the University’s mission.
