Bristol spin-out wins for medical imaging work

Micrima, a Bristol University spin-out company, has won the Royal Photographic Society’s Combined Royal Colleges Medal for 2012.

Micrima was founded by Professor Alan Preece and Professor Ian Craddock to build on work by the Microwave Imaging Group, developing radiowave radar technology for medical imaging applications, focusing on breast cancer screening. The project draws on cross-faculty expertise in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and the School of Clinical Sciences.

Besides Professors Preece and Craddock, the Micrima team consists of CEO Roy Johnson, Dr Sian Curtis, Dr Mantalena Sarafianou, and Dr Louis Tsui.

The Royal Colleges Medal is awarded for an outstanding contribution to photography and/or its application in the service of medicine and surgery. It was established by The Society in 1958 in collaboration with the Royal College of Physicians of London, the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
