The South African demonstrators gathered at the Sci Bono Science Centre in Johannesburg to find out how to perform ‘A Pollutant’s Tale’, one of ChemLabS’ most popular lecture demonstrations, which looks at the chemistry of the atmosphere and climate change through a series of spectacular experiments.

The training sessions will enable the demonstrators to perform the lecture themselves in their own science centres or in local schools in disadvantaged areas of Johannesburg and Soweto. The sessions will also show demonstrators how to run primary chemistry workshops.

The lecture demonstration and primary chemistry workshops are already being used in the Eastern Cape, thanks to an initiative set up between Bristol’s School of Chemistry and Rhodes University last year.

The Johannesburg visit was sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry, Sci Bono Science Centre and Bristol ChemLabS. The science centres participating in the project are Osizweni Education and Development Centre, Delta Environmental Centre, University of Venda, MTN Sciencentre Cape Town, ArcelorMittal Science Centre and Witwatersrand University.
