The £60,000 Centre is equipped with the latest in strength and conditioning apparatus and aims to help the development and performance of athletes in the areas of speed, strength, power agility, endurance, reaction times and stability. The facility, which is open to all, will also house another of the University’s Sports Medicine Clinics, offering physiotherapy, sports massage, injury treatment and prevention.
Bob Reeves, Director of Sport, Exercise and Health at the University, said: “The new centre marks a significant step forward in being able to offer the very best in sports performance in terms of expert-led strength and conditioning training, and specifically designed equipment. It will significantly help improve athletic performance.
“Staff at the Centre are experienced in working with sports men and women from club level through to Olympic level and will offer advice tailored to the needs of athletes to increase performance and prevent injury.”
Gordon Trevett, High Performance Manager at the University, said: “Our new Centre will add a whole new dimension to sports performance at the University. Thanks to the new equipment and a full-time strength and conditioning coach we can now drive our sports performance programme to a much higher level.
"In addition to our own use, local sports clubs and schools will also be able to take advantage of our new facility to improve their own performance.”
