Dr Timothy Browning of the Department of Mathematics received an award for his significant contributions on the interface of analytic number theory and arithmetic geometry concerning the number and distribution of rational and integral solutions to Diophantine equations.

Dr Nina Snaith (Department of Mathematics) received a prize for her work at the interface of random matrix theory and number theory.

The LMS is the major British learned society for mathematics. The Whitehead Prizes, in memory of Professor J. H. C. Whitehead, a former President of the Society, are awarded annually. From 1999, the maximum number of Whitehead Prizes awarded in any one year increased from two to four to allow for the award of prizes across the whole of mathematics, including applied mathematics, mathematical physics and mathematical aspects of computer science. Four Whitehead Prizes were awarded this year.
