Pupils from Withywood Community School were presented with certificates and prizes at a special ceremony at the University of Bristol on Monday 14 May.
The pupils, all from Year Eight, are studying for a BTEC Introductory Certificate in Hospitality, Travel and Tourism and have successfully completed a period of work experience at the University’s Catering and Events Department as part of their course.
Rhian Priest, Deputy Head of Withywood Community School, said: ‘In previous years the school has had to simulate some events in order to give students the work experience they need to complete the course successfully. This year we have been able to use our links with the University to give students experience of the real thing.
‘Spending two days a week at the Catering and Events Department of the University has had a major impact on the quality of the portfolio work produced by the students. They have also benefited from interacting with adults in a positive working environment.’
Withywood Community School will be replaced in September 2008 by the Merchants’ Academy Withywood, which is sponsored by the Society of Merchant Venturers and co-sponsored by the University of Bristol. All students attending Withywood Community School when it closes in July 2008 will automatically have a place at the Academy.
Denis Burn, Chairman of the Academy Trust, said: ‘The Academy’s special theme will be Enterprise and Skills, and the work experience these seven students have had at the University is highly appropriate and will stand them in good stead.’
Derek Pretty, Registrar of the University, said: ‘I’m very pleased we have been able to support these young people in developing their skills. This is one of a number of ways in which we are playing a part in delivering a successful Academy.’
