City kids set for scientific encounter

Science will come to life for 60 youngsters from inner-city primary schools in Bristol thanks to an action-packed day laid on by a unique partnership.

The nine- to eleven-year-olds from St Mary Redcliffe Primary and St Michael on the Mount Primary Schools will spend March 26 sharing their school science work, encountering animal skeletons, discussing dinosaur bones and meeting experts on volcanoes.

Co-ordinated by Dr Eric Albone of Clifton Scientific Trust and supported by Bristol University and Clifton College, the event is aimed at enthusing youngsters about science and giving them an early introduction to university.

Dr Albone said: "The children will swap ideas, gain real, hands-on experience and see what it's like in laboratories where world-class research is taking place. Our hope is that they will see just how exciting science can be."

Pat Rayfield, Bristol University's Director of Widening Participation, said: "We're working hard at encouraging more bright pupils from the local area to think about higher education - even while they're very young. This event is one way of giving children their first insight into how inspiring university can be."

Clifton College will host the youngsters in the morning. In the afternoon they will move to the University's Department of Earth Sciences.
