Research ethics - can you help?

Would you like to help researchers at Bristol University understand what the important issues are for people taking part in health research?

Researchers at the University's Centre for Ethics in Medicine are co-ordinating the project on research ethics with Dr Richard Ashcroft, lecturer in medical ethics at Imperial College, London.

The three-year Ethics in Research study has been funded by the Wellcome Trust and will look at what adults and children think about taking part in health research.

The aim of the project is to help researchers understand what types of issues potential research participants think are important.

All adult study participants will be asked their views on a range of issues including: consent, genetic research, the taking of blood and other tissue samples, research into the health of children and being asked sensitive lifestyle questions.

Anyone who is interested will be asked to take part in a discussion group or one-to-one interview. Discussion groups will take place at the Centre and will involve four or five people.

Children, born between April 1991 and December 31 1992, will be invited to take part in discussion sessions via some schools in the Bristol area. The aim of the children's discussion groups is to ask how children feel about taking part in health research. These sessions are intended to be fun and entertaining.

Dr Emma Williamson, a member of the project team at the Centre for Ethics in Medicine, said: 'This study is vital for people involved in trying to protect study participants in health research.'

If you would like to take part in the study or would like more information about the project, telephone Emma Williamson or Trudy Goodenough on Bristol 954 5924 or email e.williamson@bristol.ac.uk
