Mary Ward
What motivated you to come to Bristol and do this programme?
The 1+3 structure of the programme and the reputation of the University.
What is the key research question of your PhD research project and what have you found out so far?
I am investigating the role of intermediate phenotypes in the relationship between physical activity, dietary behaviour and obesity. The intermediate phenotypes that I am studying are DNA methylation and the metabolome.
Where do you think your research could lead and what are your future career plans now?
My research will hopefully lead to a better understanding of causality in the relationships between modifiable lifestyle factors, intermediate phenotypes and obesity. A good understanding of causality in these relationships is important to the question of how the major public health problem of obesity should be addressed. After my PhD I hope to go on to postdoctoral research.
Where are they now?
I have remained at the University as a Senior Research Associate in the Bristol Medical School.
