MA in Medieval Studies

Medieval students, photo by Evan JonesOur MA in Medieval Studies is a truly inter-disciplinary one year Masters programme.  Drawing on the expertise of members of the Centre for Medieval Studies, you will be able to tailor yourself a programme of study from the following disciplines:

  • Archaeology
  • English
  • Drama
  • European Language and Literature
  • History
  • History of Art
  • Late Antiquity
  • Latin
  • Music
  • Theology and Religious Studies

Each taught unit is managed by research-active Medievalists, and the dissertation component of the MA will allow you to specialise in a subject and discipline of your choice, engaging with primary sources under the supervision of a dedicated academic adviser.

The city of Bristol is an ideal place to study for medievalists of all disciplines.  During the later Middle Ages, the city expanded as a trading port with continental Europe, competing off and on in its size with Southampton, York and Norwich as England's second medieval city after London.  There are many medieval churches and other early domestic buildings surviving today.  We also enjoy special relationships with the medieval cathedral libraries of Hereford and Wells, where students visit on day trips to practice palaeography and codicology, with real documents in their original settings.

Bristol is also home to the longest-running postgraduate international medieval conference in the UK, in which you will be encouraged to play a full part.

Pathways in other taught degrees

It is also possible to focus on Medieval Studies as part of other taught postgraduate degrees across the Faculty of Arts.
