The Department is recognised by academic peers, by students and by their employers, as one of the foremost centres of mechanical engineering education and research in the UK. It has one of the most active and extensive research profiles in the University, concentrating in the three main research areas of Solid Mechanics, Dynamics and Control and Design and Process Engineering.
Our research quality was highly ranked in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. The Department received an ‘Excellent’ rating in the Teaching Quality Assessment (TQA) and consistently appears at or near the top of national surveys and league tables.
Staff in the department are at the forefront of their research fields and this enables them to keep their teaching material current. Our graduates are in high demand by industry and leave to join a variety of different companies in engineering, information technology, management consultancy etc. Our fully IMechE accredited degree provides a sound foundation for further study and many of our graduates go on to study for a higher degree.
