Dynamic Research Culture

Research is a core activity in the Department of Management. As a relatively small group, our work is quite focused, in areas such as organizational change, gender, social relationships and sustainability with a particular emphasis on practice, policy and impact in the public and not-for-profit sectors. We also have strong methodological expertise in quantitative methods as well as in innovative qualitative approaches such as arts-based and narrative methods which are a key part of the one research centre in the department, ARCIO (Action Research and Critical Inquiry in Organization). Our work is developing an increasing international reputation and attracts funding from bodies such as the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and British Academy.

Staff publish regularly in leading academic journals in organization studies, management and operational research such as Human Relations, Organization Studies, Gender, Work and Organization, International Journal of HRM and Omega. They are also represented on the editorial boards of significant journals in their fields and engaged in international research networks, conferences and other activities. The Department itself has a strong research culture with a good record of collaborative work, visiting speakers, cross-faculty research initiatives and a supportive atmosphere of mentoring and guidance for both staff and PhD students. Research also informs our teaching at all levels, especially options on the BSc in Management and our masters programmes.
