Bristol Marketing Students Help Children Support Nature In Their Own Backyards

The University of Bristol’s Department of Management is excited to announce a new partnership with the Iceland Foods Charitable Foundation (IFCF)and social enterprise Semble.
The partnership was initiated by Senior Lecturer Angela Parry-Lowther who approached Richard Walker, IFCF Trustee and Managing Director of Iceland Foods, following his support of action on climate change through Iceland’s stores and charitable foundation.
Through this partnership, students on the MSc Marketing course will benefit from real-world experience of creating a marketing communications strategy for IFCF, from briefing through to a tactical proposal presented to Semble and the foundation.
The project will focus on the Backyard Nature initiative, managed by community platform Semble with the support of over 20 leading environmental charities. The initiative was created in reaction to Iceland’s staff and young campaigners asking how they could do more to protect the planet. The goal of the initiative is “to get all children to spend more time enjoying and protecting nature where we live.” The students were briefed on the history of the campaign, outlining Iceland’s position on Corporate Social Responsibility and examples of other Semble projects including marketing campaigns for international FCMG brands Persil and Unilever.
The students will work in groups, as in a real-life scenario, to create their own individual marketing communications plans to meet the campaign objectives, considering raising the awareness of climate change within a set target market and working to an actual marketing budget.
The students will present their plans to Angela and Semble with a select number of proposals put forward to the Iceland Foods Charitable Foundation. Their presentations will take the form of a marketer pitching to their client which will be assessed with a Q&A session and feedback provided. Each student will then develop individual marketing campaign proposals, with the possibility for them to see their plans, in part or whole, put into action via a campaign.

We’re also keen to develop volunteer opportunities for students that enhance their career.”
As the department of Management becomes a school, it is working on developing partnerships with businesses, government and the third sector to provide students with a range of industry experience during their time at the university.
