Important information about meningitis
The safety and wellbeing of our students, staff and the wider campus community remains our highest priority at the University of Bristol.
Students are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the symptoms of meningococcal infection. These include one or more of the following, which can develop in any order:
- high temperature (fever)
- vomiting and diarrhoea
- severe and worsening headache
- a rash that does not fade when a glass is rolled over it (but a rash will not always develop)
- stiff neck
- dislike of bright lights
- very cold hands and feet
- drowsiness or unresponsiveness
- confusion or delirium
- seizures (fits).
Call 999 for an ambulance or or go to your nearest A&E immediately if you think you or someone you look after could have meningitis or sepsis. The closest Accident and Emergency Departments are:
- Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI)
- Southmead Hospital
- Weston General Hospital.
Students and staff should also check they are up to date with their meningitis vaccines. Students should speak to their GP for vaccine advice.
Useful information on the disease from the NHS is also available.
