Critical Care Alliance: Translational research in sepsis and critical care

In 2010, Sanjoy Shah, Critical Care Consultant at BRI,  Prof. Judith Hall (Cardiff University) and Prof.Lars Sundstrom (SARTRE project) set up a network of scientists and senior clinicians across South East Wales, South West England and West Midlands. The aim of this alliance is to facilitate translation research in the area of sepsis and the critically ill patient. In this lunchtime seminar, Sanjoy Shah will discuss the currents projects that the Alliance is working on and possible areas of collaboration. Very recently the alliance was awarded two TSB grants: Sepsis I: Multi-pathogen detection and/or simple discrimination and Sepsis II: Advancing biomarker use in sepsis management.

Current projects

  • The role of C5a and TLR in sepsis.
  • The role of gamma delta t cells and HMBPP in sepsis.
  • Evaluate new antimicrobial strategies including antimicrobial peptides
  • Multicenter database of patients with severe sepsis (culture positive vs culture negative sepsis)

Proposed

  • CMV reactivation in sepsis.
  • Role of Complement in early sepsis
  • Evaluate new antimicrobial strategies including antimicrobial peptides
  • Cooling and risk of infection in patients with out of hospital cardiac arrest
