Abstract

Do musicians need to become more entrepreneurial to survive in the digital age? There is a great deal of debate about the opportunities and threats presented by the internet and social media for musicians and the music industry, but we rarely hear from musicians about how they make money and how they feel about their circumstances. This session explores whether musicians are having to become more entrepreneurial, their views on the contemporary music industry and how they negotiate the commercial and creative aspects of their working lives.
