B) FSSL Strategic Research Initiatives Scheme
Aims of the Scheme
The FSSL Strategic Research Initiatives Scheme helps FSSL academics develop the new ideas that contribute to future research successes. It provides seed funding a wide range of initiatives that address Faculty and University research priorities, including pilot research projects, conferences, workshops and stakeholder events. Our ambition is that these strategic research initiatives will be followed by formal applications to funding councils and other external agencies. Academics organising activities within recognised FSSL themes are also eligible to apply to this scheme.
How to Make an Application
- Applicants must be permanent FSSL academic staff who are funded centrally by the University with a contract to undertake duties which include research. Proposals are welcome from individuals and groups, at any career stage.
- To apply to this scheme you should submit the cover sheet [Word 41.0kB] with a two page proposal containing a description of the proposed research initiative, including the research area, project aims, proposed participants, a breakdown and justification of costs, and potential outcomes.
- The proposal should also be clear as to how the proposed initiative contributes to Faculty and University research ambitions (for example, building capability in strategic areas, future grant applications, knowledge exchange etc.).
- Your Head of School should provide a brief statement of support, then the application should be submitted to the Senior Executive Assistant, Rebecca Bishop, in the Faculty Office for consideration by the Dean and Research Director.
- The Dean and Research Director meet monthly to review applications. Applicants will then receive an email confirming whether or not their application has been approved.
- Once an application has been approved, a claim for reimbursement of expenses can be made.
- All projects funded under the FSSL Strategic Research Initiatives Scheme will be required to submit a one page formal report to the Dean and Research Director a year after the award is made detailing subsequent outcomes. The Dean and Research Director will review the report and provide feedback.

- Attach original receipts (photocopies of cheques, bank statements, and credit card vouchers will not be accepted), including those for internet/electronic transactions.
- Send the documents, together with a copy of the original proposal cover sheet, to the Faculty Office so that the correct charge code can be inserted.
- Rebecca Bishop will then forward the documents to the Faculty Finance Team for processing.
- Please note that Finance Services regulations apply to the expense claims and further information can be found on the Finance Services website.
- Speakers should complete paper expense and/or fee claim forms and these should also be sent to the Faculty Office in the first instance so that the correct charge code can be inserted. Please ensure that the claims are marked 'Strategic Research Initiatives Scheme' and also with the name of the person who submitted the original proposal.
- The final deadline for receipt of expense claims is Monday, 2 July 2012.
