Academic Staff Research Support Scheme Management

The Research Support Schemes are managed by Professor Judith Squires (Dean of Social Sciences and Law) and Professor Wendy Larner (Faculty Research Director).  Applications and queries should go to the Senior Executive Assistant, Rebecca Bishop, in the Faculty Office in the first instance: tel: 87797 (internal), email: pa-fssl@bristol.ac.uk

Frequently asked questions:

1. What is 'seed funding'?

The Strategic Research Initiatives scheme provides small amounts of money to help get research projects started.  It is not a small grants scheme; such applications should be made to external sources such as the British Academy Small Grants Scheme <http://www.britac.ac.uk/funding/guide/srg.cfm>

2. Can I use this scheme to buy out my time?

No. This scheme covers research related expenses (eg. events, travel, data) only.

3. How big is the Strategic Research Initiatives fund?

In 2011/12 FSSL has allocated £25K in total to this fund.  We expect most awards from this fund to be within the range £500 to £2500.

4. Can I apply to the Strategic Research Initiatives scheme more than once in any one academic year?

Yes but applicants who have not already received strategic research funding will be given preference.

5. Can I apply more than once to the Academic Staff Travel Scheme?

Yes but only to the maximum amount of £750 per staff member.

6. Can I apply to the Academic Staff Travel Scheme for travel other than to conferences?

Yes but you need to show how this travel contributes to your School and Faculty Research strategy.

7. What is the best time to apply to these funds?

You can apply to this scheme at any time of the year but preferably as early as possible.  Note that all funds should be spent in the academic year they are awarded.

8. What happens if my conference is held over the summer?

As above. You should apply as soon as possible.  Any applications received after the July meeting (the last of the current year) will be considered in October (the first meeting of the new year).
