Postgraduate study

About the faculty

The Faculty of Medical and Veterinary Science has an excellent reputation for teaching and research.

The faculty teaches about 1400 BSc (Honours) undergraduates and 250 postgraduates in addition to the undergraduate students on the Medical and Dental programmes. Graduates are equipped to take their place as clinicians, researchers and teachers and to continue their personal and professional development throughout their careers.

Through our Faculty Graduate School we train taught and research students across the Medical Science disciplines of Anatomy, Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Physiology and Pharmacology. Clinical Veterinary Science students are based in laboratories situated alongside clinical and diagnostic practices and the University farm in rural Langford.

We are well supported by major grants from bodies such as the Medical Research Council, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, the Wellcome Trust, the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK and DEFRA, as well as from industry and the European Union. £35 million in annual research funding enables us to work on interdisciplinary research themes including Neuroscience, Cardiovascular Science, Dynamic Cell Biology, Animal Health and Welfare, Infection and Immunity, Biomolecular Sciences, Cancer Biology, Systems Biology (Predictive Life Sciences).

We have recently obtained Wellcome Trust funding for six annual four-year PhD studentships in Dynamic Cell Biology.  In addition we have recently obtained funding from the Medical Research Council for six four-year PhD studentships in Quantitative Imaging of Cellular Dynamics and a further 12 four-year PhD studentships in “in vivo systems neuroscience”.

The South West Doctoral Training Partnership (SWDTP) provides PhD training in areas of strategic relevance to the BBSRC. For further information about the SWDTP, possible PhD projects and the application procedure, please follow this link: SWDTP.
