Neuroscience

BrainNeuroscience is a major focus of research activity in the Faculty, and Faculty members - particularly in the Departments of Anatomy and of Physiology and Pharmacology - represent a substantial part of the University-wide Neuroscience Research Theme represented by Bristol Neuroscience.

Topics currently under study in the Faculty include:

  • intracellular signalling
  • physiology and pharmacology of neurotransmission
  • synaptic plasticity
  • memory
  • sensory processing
  • pain
  • motor control
  • cardiovascular control mechanisms
  • neuroendocrinology
  • brain-immune interactions

Techniques practised by neuroscientists in the Faculty are similarly varied. The skills needed for their research include generic bioscience methods, applicable across many types of molecular, cellular, whole animal and behavioural research, and techniques typically associated to neuroscience, such as intracellular recording of electrical nerve activity.

Everyone in neuroscience, whether a senior group leader, undergraduate, post-doc, postgraduate or anyone else with an interest in the brain come, together to form a vibrant and supportive community in the Faculty.

Details of the research being undertaken by individual groups, plus talks, events, and neuroscience news stories, can be found at:
