Second Faculty Support Staff Conference - 2007

Workshops

During the day attendees had the opportunity to attend two workshops which included a practical session on career management and development; two others on working relationship strategies and time and workload management plus an interactive workshop from two members of the Department of Anatomy on skull anatomy which also described how they both got involved with teaching anatomical classes to students.

Details of the workshops

Workshop one: 'Big Bird or Baby Bird? - You Decide! Contemporary career management strategies'
Clare Brophy, Career Coach, University of Bristol
A practical and participative session designed to help you to identify actions that you can take now to build career resilience and develop yourself for the future.

Workshop two: Adaptation of the skull to diet - how what an animal eats may affect the morphology of the skull
Steve Gaze, Teaching Services Manager & Kate Sparey, Teaching Technician, Department of Anatomy
Introduction to the workshop from Steve Gaze: An interactive 'Workshop' giving all who take part the opportunity to handle and study 'real' Osteological preparations (skulls) from different species. In small groups you will be asked to try and deduce, from the specimens you handle, and the Anatomical information offered to you, just exactly what 'type' of skulls... Hunter or Prey... they are. You will then be challenged into making your group decision as to whether the skulls are that of Carnivores, Herbivores or Omnivores i.e. which dietary type they are.

Both Kate and myself have come through the Technical ranks and amongst other duties we teach Anatomy to Veterinary and Science students. Much of our teaching is in practical dissection classes, but we also give small group tutorials. Part of the Workshop will be describing 'how' we came to be involved with the Teaching and 'what' it has involved. We look forward to a lively and fruitful discussion!!

Workshop three: 'How to manage your manager'
Julia Bingham, Personnel Co-ordinator/PA to Head of Department, Clinical Science at North Bristol
This interactive workshop will explore the relationship between employees and their managers. Working through case studies, you will be provided with hints and tips on how to manage your manager effectively to get the most out of your working relationship.

Workshop four: 'Not enough hours in the day!' Strategies for getting the best out of your time
Kate Tapper, Staff Development Manager
This interactive session will help you to identify where your time goes and offer some different ways to identify priorities and eliminate some of the hassle from your life.
