Your Career and Development
Career Framework
What do we mean by a Career?
When we think of Career progression we tend to think of progression upwards along a hierarchical pathway or ladder. This is an important aspect of careers but it is not the only one. Career progression could equally mean moving around an organisation to find fulfilling and enjoyable work that provides interest, variety and personal growth. This could even mean moving down a hierarchical ladder. Equally a career might mean staying put in the right job and continuing to do a good job without the need to move or change, but with a commitment to continuing personal and professional development. Progression is more personal than hierarchical and the way it looks is very individual.
Who should be managing my Career?
You
We all have ultimate responsibility for managing our own careers, taking on appropriate training and development opportunities and making decisions about the jobs we do. We cannot expect a career to mapped out for us by anyone else, or for opportunities to be presented to us on demand. However we can expect support to help us with our learning and development.
Who should support my learning and development?
Your manager
Your manager should take an active interest in your learning and development needs. When you have identified needs that match the objectives in your role your manager should help you to find ways of meeting these by learning on the job, or attending staff development courses or other training where possible.
Support services for staff
There are a range of Career Development Opportunities at UoB:

How will Career development opportunities improve at the University?
The development of a Career Framework will make it easier to identify career options at the University. This includes seeing whether your job fits into a broader Career Pathway that has a clear sense of progression in the traditional sense, with jobs increasing in responsibility and salary following on from one another. It will make clear how you could 'join' a particular pathway you are interested in, or help you identify more unique jobs that might match your own unique CV! It will be much clearer to see what is required to do a certain kind of job so that you can work out what you might be good at and make well-informed choices about training and development.
