Joint PhD Scholarships Programme

Information on the schedule for applications for entry in 2019 will be made available in July 2018.

How to Apply?

  1. Apply directly for admission to the University of Bristol by 15 January 2018. Please specify that you wish to apply for the China Scholarship Council - University of Bristol Joint Scholarships Programme.
  2. Complete the short CSC - Bristol Scholarship Contact Information Form.
  3. Upon receiving applications, the University of Bristol will evaluate the candidates. The University will provide the China Scholarship Council and each successful candidate with a copy of an unconditional offer letter for study.
  4. After receiving the offer letter from the University of Bristol, nominated candidates must apply directly to the China Scholarship Council for funding. The application guidance will be published on the CSC official website.
  5. Candidates must inform the University of Bristol of the progress of their application to the CSC, including the dates of submission and any interview dates. 
  6. The CSC will draw up a list of successful scholarship recipients, who will then be contacted by the University of Bristol. 
  7. The PhD research programmes will start in September 2018.


Candidates must have a strong academic background and be permanent residents of the People’s Republic of China at the time of application. Chinese students studying overseas may also be eligible for application subject to CSC policies.

Candidates must fulfil the relevant academic entry requirements set by the University of Bristol, the appropriate level of English Language requirements defined for each PhD programme, and the study visa requirements of the UK Government.

Candidates must also satisfy all selection criteria required by the CSC.

What is the CSC - Bristol Joint Scholarships Programme?

40 CSC - Bristol PhD scholarships are available for admission in 2018 for up to 48 months of research at the University of Bristol.

The University of Bristol provides full tuition fees for each PhD programme.

The China Scholarship Council provides:

  • a stipend (as specified by the Chinese Government)
  • a return international airfare between China and the UK
  • funding to cover passport and visa fees.
