Professor Janice Thompson

Janice is Professor of Public Health Nutrition and joined the Centre in 2005. In 1991 she completed her PhD in Exercise Physiology and Nutrition from Arizona State University. After completing a post-doctoral fellowship at Stanford University in 1995, she worked at University of North Carolina, Charlotte and at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center. She is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), and recently served a two-year term as Vice President of ACSM. She has also recently been appointed to serve on the Scientific Committee of the European College of Sport Science (ECSS).

She currently teaches on the MSc in Nutrition, Physical Activity and Public Health and on various courses within the School for Policy Studies. Her research interests involve working with high-risk populations in community-based settings to develop culturally-tailored interventions to reduce obesity, physical inactivity, and the subsequent risks for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. She has been awarded a University of Bristol Engagement Award for her on-going community-based research activities. She has authored numerous peer-reviewed research publications and textbooks focusing on nutrition or sports nutrition. She enjoys real ales, great music, hiking, yoga, travelling, and appreciating and creating art.
