Solid Mechanics

Solid Mechanics logo

Solid Mechanics aims to understand the mechanical behaviour of complex engineering components.

The team strive to follow the parallel tracks of the development of new models of material behaviour as well having a strong experimental base. This approach has enabled them to establish an enviable reputation for close collaboration with industry, particularly in the power generation sector (see for example the Nuclear Systems Performance Centre.

Solid mechanics explores the way engineering materials respond to loading to improve the efficiency and safety of structures.

Core activities centre around the general theme of structural integrity, encompassing research endeavours in residual stress modelling and measurement, fracture and fatigue of engineering materials, high temperature materials behaviour and associated design activities.

To remain at the international forefront of research in the areas of residual stress, fracture, fatigue and high temperature materials behaviour, the group will maintain and strengthen its close links with industry, using contemporary industrial needs as drivers for the research agenda.
