Dynamic Designs Masterclass Week - July 18th-22nd, 2011

In July 2011, six engineering students from Chengdu, China visited the University of Bristol for a week-long Masterclass on sustainable engineering.

They (as ‘Team of Legend’) were the winners of the 2011 Dynamic Designs China competition. This was a major event across China, run as a collaboration between the University and the British Council, and the live online broadcast of the grand final in Shanghai drew 1.5 million viewers.

‘Team of Legend’ spent the week in Bristol working with specialists in various fields of engineering to make their competition-winning design even better, in particular working on creative ways to make the building more sustainable. See Team of Legend's film of their experience here.

Their five days in the Faculty of Engineering laboratories included work on:

  • the structural design of their hospital building
  • using modern ‘green’ materials to replace carbon-intensive materials
  • reducing the energy consumption of the hospital
  • researching sustainable sources of energy for the hospital, including solar and wind power
  • investigating the wider environmental impact of the building using Systems thinking methods

They also visited the Environment Agency offices in Bristol to see the award-winning sustainable design and heard a seminar on sustainable design from Hoare Lea, the building's designers.

The week culminated (on Thursday 21st July) in the Bristol Dynamic Designs Lecture, which included a presentation from the Team of Legend on their original design and how they  improved it through their work with Bristol researchers.

The lecture itself ‘Entering the Ecological Age – the Engineer’s Role’ was delivered by Peter Head CBE FREng FRSA. It outlined the challenges facing society in the context of climate change and a burgeoning world population. It reviewed the major changes required in the development of infrastructure, policy and the role of the engineer, to enable climate change issues to be tackled in urban and rural areas, in both developing and developed countries, with a particular emphasis on China. The event was chaired by Professor Nick Lieven. The slides from Peter Head's lecture can be downloaded here.

Peter Head is a Consultant with Arup, Chairman of the Institute for Sustainability, and CEO of the Ecological Sequestration Trust.

The event took place on Thursday 21st July, from 5.30pm-7.00pm in the Pugsley Lecture Theatre, Queen’s Building, University Walk, Bristol. For more information, please contact john.mcwilliams@bristol.ac.uk.

It is hoped that Dynamic Designs will be repeated - details will be posted on this website when there is any further update on this.
