Professor Stuart Burgess

Pugsley Lecture Theatre, Queens Building, University Walk

The talk will explain the role Bristol University played in helping to design the track bikes used by Team GB at the Rio Olympics.

The University of Bristol had the task of designing the most efficient bicycle transmission possible as well as building a test rig that could measure transmission efficiency to extremely high levels of accuracy.

The team led by Professor Stuart Burgess came up with a new chain and sprocket design. They also designed a unique pendulum test rig (inspired by precision mechanical clocks) which was key to the development of the new transmission design.

At the Rio Olympics, the new transmission helped Team GB to their most successful performance ever on the track, winning medals in all 9 events that were entered and breaking two world records. The talk will explain some of the excitement and science behind the project.
