The department's research covers such diverse topics as advanced materials for aero-engines, adaptive control systems theory and energy studies in power stations. The department engages in research of an international standard over the full range of mechanical engineering and has one of the most active and extensive research profiles in the University.
Academic and industrial collaboration within the department includes but is not limited to the Bristol Robotics Laboratory in partnership with the University of the West of England (UWE), the UK Research Centre in NDE (RCNDE) of which Bristol is the founding academic member and South West Nuclear Hub - a joint venture with the University of Oxford.
