Research summary

My research focusses on the effects of residual stresses in engineering materials and structures. Many common manufacturing processes including welding, forging and most additive manufacturing techniques leave behind large residual stresses in materials which can accelerate damage. As a result, it is important to take the effects of residual stress into account when assessing the integrity of high-reliability structures like nuclear reactor pressure circuits and airframe components. In the past, I have worked on methods for reducing the stresses introduced by welding and on methods of residual stress measurement and reconstruction. Since 2015, I have held a research fellowship funded ...

I received an MEng in Engineering Science from the University of Oxford in 2009 before joining the Welding group at Cranfield University for my PhD, which was on reduction of residual stress in welds by localised rolling. In 2013, I joined the Solid Mechanics group at Bristol to work on fracture mechanics and stress field reconstruction methods. Currently I hold an EPSRC fellowship on advanced structural analysis for nuclear applications. This allows me to do research work in several areas including fracture, high-temperature creep, residual stress, and manufacturing processes.
