For many sixth-form students selecting the ‘right subject’ to study at university is not an easy task, and an investigation of career opportunities can help. This is particularly true for electrical and electronic engineering, which embraces so many fields and has become such a key profession in recent years. In this wide-ranging subject area, the job of a professional engineer can involve anything from the design of complete highly complex systems down to the design of novel opto-electronic components, at the borderline between physics and engineering. The skills involved, including hardware and software, have led to electrical and electronic engineers finding a varied range of career opportunities, particularly in the rapidly growing power and sustainable energy sectors.
You will find our recent graduates working in the personal and broadcast communications industries, including information and multi-media technologies with both video and audio elements; in power and control systems; and in new environmentally friendly energy management systems that are a dominant issue within the power generation and transportation sectors. Their skills are needed in the design of medical instrumentation, as well as monitoring, control and analysis in the civil, mechanical and aeronautical engineering fields.
New developments are occurring daily in electrical and electronic engineering and so the profession is ideally suited to men and women who are able to respond to change by devising creative solutions. The common aim of all our degree programmes is to create skilled individuals who are keen to meet these challenges, confident that they have been taught how to approach and solve problems through an education that has both breadth and depth. Needless to say these skills are useful in a variety of other fields, so an even wider range of eventual careers is available, including financial services, accountancy and management.
