We spoke to our Civil Engineering alumni about their current roles and what advice they have for future students.

Since leaving Bristol...

I've worked in London on large-scale high-rise projects as well as in West Sussex on smaller-scale projects. I also volunteer on eco-build projects in my spare time, which I was inspired to do while at Bristol.

In my current job...

I design mainly house extensions and refurbishments, as well as alterations to historic buildings. I love working with existing buildings as there are always hidden surprises!

Having a UoB Civil Engineering degree...

It's given me a practical understanding of engineering. Learning from lecturers who have worked, or were still working, as engineers encouraged us to focus on design outcomes and how best to apply engineering theory. Practical courses such as the surveying field trip were really beneficial. We were also allocated industrial tutors which gave us even more insight into the daily life of an engineer.

Top tips for future students...

Do an internship before university as I did - many large companies offer these and it will really help when you get to university. Get some site experience before or during university too. And most importantly, enjoy studying in Bristol - it's an amazing city!
