For 2011/12 the School offers the following Open Units:
Globalisation and Development (ECON10053) 20 Credit Points
This unit starts by asking why some countries developed faster than others before the 20th Century. It moves on to introduce models of development and under development. It looks at the influence that international trade, financial globalisation etc have on modern development. Finally examining in detail the agricultural and industrial sectors and what governments can do to facilitate their transformation as well as development of the whole economy.
Introduction to Management (EFIM10001) 20 Credit Points
This unit will provide a rigorous grounding in management and organisational approaches to different methods of structuring analysis, with special emphasis on structuring analysis in using non-quantitative models. As a consequence, students taking the unit will develop a critical understanding of the complex nature of effective analysis in management, which will help them to be better managers themselves.
The units do not assume any previous knowledge of Economics, but some GCSE level Mathematics will be used. See the individual unit descriptions for pre-requisites and restrictions.
FIRST YEAR STUDENTS (from outside the School of EFM)
New incoming first year students who wish to take any of the open units offered by the School of EFM must register at the Central University Open Unit Fair on Thursday 6 October 2011, 2-5pm. There is no facility for pre-registration. Places will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis at the Open Unit Fair, so arrive early to avoid disappointment.
Please note: if you are asked to complete any kind of pre-registration form (e.g. for your home department or Faculty) indicating your wish to take one of the units listed above, you must still register with the School of EFM at the Open Unit Fair in October to be allocated a place on any of these units.
RETURNING STUDENTS (from outside the School of EFM)
