Open Units Offered by the School of Economics, Finance and Management
For 2009/10 the School offers the following Open Units:
- Introduction to Accounting (ACCG10052) 20 Credit Points
This unit teaches participants to prepare and analyse the three main financial accounting statements - the balance sheet, profit and loss account and cash flow statement. It introduces the methods which form the basis of management accounting and of financial decision-making.
- Introduction to Management (EFIM10001) 20 Credit Points
This unit is not open to students studying degrees within the School of Economics, Finance and Management
This unit will provide grounding in management and organisational theory, and will equip students with an understanding of the nature of managerial work, and of the environment in which managers operate.
- Principles of Economics (EFIM10050) 20 Credit Points
This unit is not open to students studying degrees within the School of Economics, Finance and Management.
This unit introduces the main concepts and models used in microeconomics, and demonstrates how these ideas can be used to explain some of the pressing problems in political economy faced by society.
- Globalisation and Development (ECON10053) 20 Credit Points
This unit provides an overview of the economics of Globalisation and Development with particular focus on the problems facing Less Developed Countries (LDCs). Topics covered include economic growth, poverty and inequality, trade, debt, and domestic and international development policy.
The units do not assume any previous knowledge of Economics, but some GCSE level Mathematics will be used. See the individual unit descriptions for pre-requisites and restrictions.
Registration for School of EFM Open Units
FIRST YEAR STUDENTS (from outside the School of EFM)
New incoming first year students who wish to take any of the open units offered by the School of EFM must register at the Central University Open Unit Fair on Thursday 1st October 2009. There is no facility for pre-registration. Places will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis at the Open Unit Fair, so arrive early to avoid disappointment.
Please note: if you are asked to complete any kind of pre-registration form (e.g. for your home department or Faculty) indicating your wish to take one of the units listed above, you must still register with the School of EFM at the Open Unit Fair in October to be allocated a place on any of these units.
RETURNING STUDENTS (from outside the School of EFM)
Returning students from Schools/Departments outside the School of EFM can reserve a place on any of the above open units by sending an email to the School's Information Office (efim-info@bristol.ac.uk). Please include in the email your name, student number and the unit(s) you want to register for. Please ensure that you comply with all the pre-requisites before signing up.
