Required subjects

These are the subjects which candidates MUST be studying if they are to be made an offer.

Mathematics (**Except the new "Use of Mathematics" A-level. This will NOT be accepted as an entrance requirement for any degrees in the School of EFM)

Candidates who do not have English as their first language must offer a suitable English Language qualification such as IELTS at level 7.0 (with a minimum of 6.5 in each section); TOEFL ® iBT 107/120; TOEFL computer based test 280; TOEFL paper based test 650.
Candidates applying for one of our programmes with Study in Continental Europe need to show language ability. If you were to use Scottish school qualifications for this purpose then we would normally ask for Higher level in the subject for French or German or a grade A at GCSE in the subject for Spanish or Italian. For A-level candidates we require (if not one of your three A-levels) :
- French AS-level grade B; or
- German AS-level grade B; or
- Italian GCSE grade A; or
- Spanish GCSE grade A; or
- Suitable non-academic evidence of ability in the relevant language

Preferred subjects

These are the subjects which, although not essential, may give candidates an advantage over similar applicants who are not studying them. As well as the subjects for specific programmes shown below, these include Further Mathematics as a FOURTH A-level or at AS-level.

Excluded subjects

Are those subjects which we do not accept as entrance qualifications because it is our experience that they do not evidence sufficient depth of ability.

Excluded subject combinations

It is our experience that candidates offering certain combinations of A-levels tend not to be successful on our degree programmes, perhaps because of the abilities they have developed are too focused towards one particular area and they lack the breadth of ability for studying in our School. We are therefore unlikely to make offers to candidates offering Mathematics, Further Mathematics plus one other A-level.
