CMPO members Lindsey Macmillan, Jack Britton along with Professor Paul Gregg (of the University of Bath) have contributed towards a new report published by the Commission on Youth Unemployment finds that youth unemployment has reached emergency point. With 1 in 5 young people not in employment, education or training and a quarter of a million unemployed for over a year, the Commission says youth unemployment is not only one of the greatest challenges facing the country in human terms, but is also a £28bn timebomb under the nation’s finances.

Mergers are unlikely to be the most effective way of dealing with poorly performing NHS hospitals, according to new research from the Centre for Market and Public Organisation (CMPO). The study by Professor Carol Propper and colleagues finds that the wave of hospital consolidation in the late 1990s and early 2000s – in which around half the acute hospitals in England were involved in a merger – brought few benefits.

New Research from Professor Simon Burgess and Dr Steven Proud, of the Centre for Market and Public Organisation, with Dr Robert Metcalfe of the University of Oxford has been widely reported in the news. Their research has shown that children who sit high stakes examinations during major football tournaments perform worse than if they sat them in a football-free summer.

Dr Helen Simpson has been awarded a £70,000 Philip Leverhulme Prize. Around 30 prizes are awarded annually to “outstanding scholars who have made a substantial and recognised contribution to their particular field of study.”
