Former Bristol BSc Economics and Accounting student appointed Finance Minister of Malaysia

The group Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of CIMB Group Holdings, alumnus Bhd Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Aziz (BSc 1996), has been appointed as the Finance Minister by Malaysian Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin [on 9 March].

Professor Ian Tonks, Head of the Department of Accounting and Finance at the University of Bristol said “We are immensely proud that one of our former students has gone on to excel in their financial services career culminating in this major governmental role. Tengku has maintained a close relationship over the years with the University and our Malaysian alumni community and we are delighted at his success.” 

Tengku was born in Kuala Lumpur, where he started his career in the banking and finance sector with AmInvestment Bank in 1996. He then joined Crédit Agricole as an investment analyst, becoming a director in a span of few years. He then joined Avenue Capital Resources (now ECM Libra) as group managing director.

He was an advisor to Tenaga Nasional Bhd’s president before joining CIMB Investment Bank Bhd as the company’s CEO.

The new Finance Minister received his early education at the prestigious Malay College Kuala Kangsar, before proceeding to further his studies at the University of Bristol, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Hons) Economics and Accounting in 1996.
