Grant Success for Professor Sheila Ellwood

Professor Sheila Ellwood (of the Department of Accounting and Finance) is part of a team that has won a grant of £467,685 to investigate the current practice and future potential for the NHS health economy of Patient Level Information and Costing Systems (PLICS).

PLICS are increasingly used in NHS acute hospitals. This three year study uses surveys and case studies to investigate how PLICS can achieve:

  • Cost improvement through enhanced technical efficiency;
  • Better allocative efficiency of resources within healthcare economies (first, within and between Trusts, second, between primary and secondary/tertiary care and, third, along care pathways and year of care);
  • Understanding clinical variation in resource use and the relationships between cost and quality;
  • Greater clinical engagement through more clinical ownership of costs and information systems

The team consists of Professors Lewellyn and Chambers (Manchester Business School);  Professor Sheila Ellwood (Bristol), two NHS Finance Directors and a leading public health physician.
