Two teams of students from our second-year Management Accounting unit have reached the semi-finals of the IBM Universities Business Challenge. 272 teams took part in the first five rounds of the challenge, including eight from Bristol. Each team was in a group of eight teams playing against each other, with the winners of each group advancing to the semi-finals. The competition involved running a business and trying to maximize profit and customer satisfaction in a constantly changing business environment. New updated scenarios were issued every Tuesday throughout the term, with business strategy and financial decisions submitted by a deadline one week later.
All the Bristol teams taking part did well, but two managed to come top of their groups and will be representing the university at the regional semi-finals next term. These teams are: ‘Local Business Machines’ Charlotte Burnside [Captain], Sophie Hiscox, Lucy Griffin, Ammar Dungarwalla and Paul White; and ‘The Alpha Dogs’ Jueta Kurar [Captain], Ed Bell, Alex Dumbell, Clemens Reutter and Andrew Paschalis.
The Challenge is a true learning experience for all those who enter. It will help students to improve their decision-making skills, develop their team-working abilities and increase their knowledge in key business areas such as marketing, finance and production.
