Sonia Bhalotra joins WHO Scientific Group

Sonia Bhalotra has been appointed to a new Scientific Resource Group on Health Equity Analysis and Research at the World Health Organisation (WHO). Some 15-20 members have been selected from amongst academia, NGOs and government on the basis of their knowledge and expertise on equity and health and Sonia was selected from amongst 450 nominees. This honorary appointment is from October 2009 for two years, after which it may be extended to five years.

Sonia has published extensively on health and survival in developing countries. Her recent publications in this area include ‘Fatal Fluctuations? Cyclicality In Infant Mortality In India’ in the Journal of Development Economics (2009), ‘The Puzzle of Muslim Advantage In Child Survival In India’ (with C Valente and A van Soest) in the Journal of Health Economics (2009), ‘Birth-Spacing, Fertility and Neonatal Mortality In India: Dynamics, Frailty and Fecundity’ (with A van Soest) in the Journal of Econometrics (2008). Sonia has also recently been elected as a new council member for the European Society for Population Economics (ESPE) for period 2010-2012.

Members will advise WHO on strategic directions, work plan content, objectives and priorities.
