Two CASE PhD Scholarships at CMPO

The Department of Economics is seeking applications for two CASE PhD Scholarships to be funded jointly by the ESRC and non-academic partner organisations. The scholarships are part of new capacity-building clusters on the economic impact of the third sector located within the Centre for Market and Public Organisation. The aim of the clusters is to use economic analysis to improve the evidence base on the impact of the non-governmental, not-for-profit sector. The first two CASE PhDs are in the following areas:

What is the impact of performance measurement in the third sector?

Supervised by Simon Burgess and Carol Propper and sponsored by New Philanthropy Capital, this PhD will look at:

  • What has been the impact of introducing performance measures on services?
  • Are such performance measures vulnerable to gaming?
  • What might be the impact of turning a tool for self-evaluation into a basis for commissioning services?

The implications of behavioural economics for promoting charitable giving

Supervised by Sarah Smith and sponsored  by the Charities Aid Foundation, this PhD project will consider the implications of behavioural economics for how governments and charities might encourage charitable giving and will test the effect of alternative mechanisms in the field.
