Students Essay-Competition Success

Second-year Philosophy and Economics student Roderick McKinley and final-year Economics student Bob Denham were both ranked in the top ten finalists (out of over 150 entries) in an essay competition organized by Deloittes. The finalists met Ian Watmore (Permanent Secretary at the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills), who was the guest speaker at an event held at Deloitte's London head office to celebrate the achievements of the finalists.

The competition title was:

  • 'After years of decline and closure of science departments, significant increases in students are being reported in 2008-2009 on chemistry, physics and maths courses,' the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) reports, but says there is still a lot more work to be done. Should the Government be in the business of influencing students' choices of university courses to plug a perceived skills gap?
