Theory from the East: from Double Polarization to Crypto Facism

5 June 2017, 4.00 PM - 5 June 2017, 6.00 PM

Don Kalb, Professor of Sociology and Social Anthropology at Central European University in Budapest

Verdon-Smith Room, Royal Fort House

In this Institute for Advanced Studies research workshop Professor Kalb will speak to the integration of postsocialist Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) into the EU. CEE transition was deeply disruptive and left seriously polarized societies in its wake. He will show that postsocialist integration into EU capitalist project was organized to institutionalize downward pressures on living standards and subdue voice and bargaining. He will also discuss how this process resulted in the dialectical production of widening social divides paired with deepening cultural divisions and divisive identity politics.
