We are keen to take on new PhD candidates. The following PhD Scholarships are open to UK students and allow the candidate and prospective supervisors to work out a topic of mutual interest. Applications are assessed on receipt. Applications from Year-3 students on a four-year course are welcome now, for start after completion of their course. The funding pays for a tax-free stipend of at least £15,000pa, a research and travel budget, and University fees. Applicants should be on track to obtaining a 1st class degree in Engineering Science, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Physics, Materials, Engineering Mathematics, or similar.
A similar funding scheme is to obtain PhD funding in conjunction with a Teaching Assistantship. This route is open to UK and EU graduates who are on track for a 1st class degree.
In addition, the following PhD Studentships for UK/EU candidates are available for specific research topics. They are similar to the scholarships, but usually have fixed application deadlines and often attract an additional tax-free industry-funded bonus of a few £k.
Applicants should have, or be predicted to obtain, a 2.1 degree or higher in Engineering Science, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Physics, Materials, Engineering Mathematics, or similar.
Unfortunately the University is only able to obtain a few PhD Studentships for Overseas Candidates each year. If your CV is exceptional, please apply to us as listed above, and we will put you forward for the University Scholarship competition.
Please apply as soon as possible for the PhD scholarships or PhD funding in conjunction with a Teaching Assistantship. You must include the name of our research group in your application, or even suggest specific PhD supervisors, or your application will not find its way to us! PhD candidates in our group have two supervisors.
Any time after the middle of Year 3 of a 4-year course is suitable for an application. We can make an offer subject to the outcome of 3rd year exam results. Most PhD applications are evaluated all year round, as the come in, and the advert stays live until a suitable candidate is found. Specific PhD studentships become available at fairly short notice throughout the year; it is therefore best to apply as soon as possible, and to email us occasionally if you are still looking. In addition to the formal application, it can help to email us a cover letter stating your interests and a full CV (including nationality, grades, a summary transcript, references, and other sources of funding) to the address on the right. You may also call us to discuss research projects other than those listed below, if you have a source of funding. Unfortunately, we do not have time to acknowledge the receipt of CVs.
We are always keen to receive CVs from excellent postdoctoral researchers and PhD candidates near completion.
Summer work placements are available to 3rd and 4th year UK/EU undergraduate students only. The stipend is typically £2400 (tax free) for 10 weeks' work; the timing is flexible. Projects are usually very practical and you will gain a lot of hands-on experience of research and development in energy-related areas. Previous projects have included electric vehicles, medical sensors, renewable energy conversion, and even endangered animal tracking. Please apply with a full CV with year grades. There is no deadline, however applications are dealt with as they come in, so it is best to apply around March/April/May. If your interests are outside of those of the Energy Management Group, then your application will be forwarded to the most suitable research group.
We currently have companies asking for short studies to be carried out in various fields, including renewable energy and mathematical modelling. If you have some spare time, a degree in a scientific subject, or are close to getting one, and you live close to Bristol, then please email us your CV and transcript. Hourly pay is £10 - £20 depending on your experience.
These PhD scholarships are available for UK students. Applications are assessed as they come in and applications from current 3rd year students on an MEng course are very welcome. Applications currently being accepted. Deadline 14th February 2012 for full formal application including references submitted.

This PhD will involve looking at the next revision of aircraft generators designed specifically with the ability to act as an aircraft engine starter as well as a generator. Based upon existing understanding of high power density machines a multi-physics approach (electro-magnetic, thermal and mechanical) will be used to design, build and evaluate a new generator from the ground up based upon the new requirements. One the application, please state Dr. D. Drury as a supervisor. Applications currently being accepted.
A fully-funded 3½ year PhD studentship in the design of advanced, high-efficiency drives is available in the Electrical Energy Management Group. There is the option of working with industry. Please contact us for more details. Applications will be considered as they come in. Applications currently being accepted.
You will join the Group whose research explores the challenges of high efficiency electrical drive systems for application in aircraft, hybrid vehicles and renewable generation. Much of this research involves theoretical analyses combined with concept demonstration. To support this activity the group has established excellent hardware-in-the-loop best facilities with ratings up to 250 kW. Recent award of research funding has generated an opportunity for the appointment of an electro-mechanical control specialist to support the Group’s research. The post will form part of an interdisciplinary team of postdoctoral researchers and postgraduates investigating novel electrical generation and drive system concepts. It will focus initially on the 'More Electric Aircraft'. The principal responsibilities will be:
Salary: £29k - £34k
Fully funded for 3½ year PhD studentships are available or will be becoming available in the following areas:
