Music study guide 2024/5

What you can study

You will be taught by internationally recognised musicologists and composers and by a team of professional instrumental and vocal tutors. We bring the latest research and expertise of our staff directly into the classroom. We offer a vast range of performance opportunities both within the university, and beyond, through the partnerships we have with people, organisations, schools, churches, festivals and venues in Bristol and the region.

You will find units on:

  • musicology
  • composition
  • performance
  • diverse styles and genres

Pre-requisites

Musical literacy is expected for Music Department units. If in doubt, contact Dr Justin Williams, current Study Abroad Academic Director for Music.

At UK universities, students specialise from their first year and rarely take units outside their degree subject. This means that:

  • Year 2 units require some university study in the discipline.
  • Year 3 units require a strong background in the discipline.

Year 1

Pre-requisites: suitable for Music majors or those with prior study of the subject at university
