Transport and Communications
Increasing global trade and international travel demand fast, efficient, low-carbon transport technologies. Expertise in aerodynamic design and structural optimisation is being used to develop ultra-green aircraft that minimise fuel burn, through the use of advanced engine technologies and light-weight composite materials. This is complemented by research on hybrid vehicle technologies, such as novel electric motors, aimed at maximising energy efficiency in both cars and aircraft. The University is also closely involved with the development of innovative urban transport systems, such as ULTRA (Urban Light TRAnsport), which rely on expertise in network modelling to optimise traffic flows.
