On the 15th November 2010, the University will launch a major new environmental research institute, bringing together current activities across a wide range of academic groups.

September 2010 marks Bristol University's inagural entry into the international Aeolus Wind Powered Vehicle Race in Denamrk and we are the only UK team participating. With less than 1 month to go before the race, final vehicle assembly and testing is currently underway.

We are currently in the process of planning an undergraduate research project competition for the 2010/2011 academic year with Low Carbon South West (LCSW), Bath University and the University of West of England (UWE). This will help to promote research projects with an environmental theme, encouraging increased knowledge transfer with industry and providing our students with improved access to related career opportunities.

Wind and Marine Energy is set to make a dominant contribution to achieving the UK’s renewable energy targets, but recent studies have highlighted that skills and recruitment shortages will provide a major obstacle to further expansion. The Faculty of Engineering has recently launched a new Masters Level teaching module in Wind and Marine Power, attracting approximately 100 undergraduates and around 30 professionals from local companies.

During the summer, a multidisciplinary team of students and academics from across the Faculty of Engineering, have completed the design of the University's entry for the 2010 Aeolus Wind Powered Vehicle Race, being held in the Netherlands. Manufacture of the vehicle has now begun in earnest, in order to finish the build by early April and leave enough time for fully testing and refining the vehicle before the August race.
