Hazards and Risk

Population growth and increasing urbanisation are placing ever greater importance on the ability to predict extreme natural events and mitigate their effects. The University is playing a leading role in this area, with expertise in fields such as flood forecasting and seismology. This is complemented by a world-class capability in earthquake engineering and the development of bridges, dams and buildings able to survive extreme seismic events. Expertise in uncertainty modelling and risk analysis is used to aid the development of advance warning systems, helping to ensure minimum threat to human life. A dedicated research centre, BRISK (Bristol environmental RISK), was launched in early 2009 to coordinate, promote and advance interdisciplinary research across the natural, engineering and social sciences in environmental hazard risk assessment and uncertainty science.
