Lecture and Virtual Tour

The Bristol Centre for Nanoscience and Quantum Information (NSQI) provides state-of-the-art specialised laboratories whose vibration and acoustic noise levels are amongst the lowest achieved anywhere world-wide. It also has a unique purpose-designed environment in which a multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary research community drawn from science, engineering, and medicine can be fostered and thrive through stimulating interactions and the exchange of ideas. The lecture will inform the public about the special features of the Centre specially designed to host research in Nanoscience and Quantum Information and about the breakthrough research that is being carried out at present. This includes the development of novel renewable energy devices such as diamond energy converters for concentrated solar power.

ACCIS Annual Conference and I-Composites Grand Challenge Event

The Advanced Composites Centre for Innovation and Science (ACCIS) will be hosting its third Annual Conference on September 15th 2010, providing an overview of its wide ranging research activities and an update on initiatives such as the Composites Doctoral Training Centre and the new National Composites Centre. The afternoon of the conference will also incorporate the I-Composites Grand Challenge Research Event.

Engage 2010 - Public Engagement Conference

Cabot Institute Launch Event

On the 15th November, the University will launch a major new environmental research institute. The Cabot Institute will bring together current activities across a range of academic groups at the University, including environmental scientists, geographers, engineers, and legal and social scholars, to deliver a strategic multidisciplinary research agenda on environmental uncertainty and resilience. The University has great strengths in these areas, and the Cabot Institute represents an exciting opportunity for Bristol to develop a world-class research institute.

Preliminary Programme

Afternoon Session

2:30pm – 3:00pm: Arrival and coffee

3:00pm – 4:30pm: Talks by leading University of Bristol academics outlining the aims of the Cabot Institute and key research themes

4:30pm – 5:45pm: Poster display, drinks and networking

Evening Session

5:45pm – 7:00pm: A ‘Question Time’ style debate involving leading environmental scientists, policy makers and campaigners. Panellists will include Sir Crispin Tickell (Director of Policy Foresight Programme), Jonathon Porritt (Founder Director of Forum For The Future), Brendon Gormley (Chief Executive of the Disasters Emergency Committee) and Ric Parker (Director of Research and Technology, Rolls Royce)
